Robotic and autonomous systems provider Milrem Robotics has partnered with Ukrainian defence company Frontline to integrate the Tracked Hybrid Modular Infantry System (THeMIS) uncrewed ground vehicle (UGV) with the BURIA remote weapon station (RWS).

The BURIA RWS, armed with a 40mm automatic grenade launcher, underwent successful live-fire trials from the THeMIS UGV, demonstrating its operational relevance and effectiveness.

Milrem said the tests mark “a significant step forward in the development of uncrewed combat support capabilities”.

The trials confirmed that the BURIA-THeMIS integration allows for precision targeting up to 1,100 metres.

Milrem Robotics industrial partnership director Paul Clayton said: “This successful demonstration verifies the reliability and accuracy of the BURIА-THeMIS integration. It highlights the expanding role of robotic platforms in improving tactical effectiveness and operator safety on the modern battlefield.”

During the testing phase, the THeMIS Combat UGV showcased stability and target tracking capabilities.

The demo also indicated the potential for remotely operated fire support systems to provide accurate and effective firepower without exposing soldiers to direct combat.

Frontline CEO Yevhen Tretiak said: “BURIA is part of our vision for a robotic frontline — where drones perform defensive and offensive operations while soldiers remain out of harm’s way. Together, we’re fast-tracking these technologies to the frontlines.”

Further evaluations involving live-fire tests and tactical assessments are scheduled to take place in the coming weeks.

These will help refine system performance in various combat scenarios and shape future upgrades and deployment strategies, stated Milrem.

The THeMIS UGV is the first of its kind to be used by Ukrainian Armed Forces in their ongoing conflict.

The BURIA grenade launcher RWS entered military service in January 2025 and has since been produced serially. Its integration into combat units is supported by a specialised training programme tailored for frontline application.

In response to growing demand, Milrem Robotics expanded its production capacity significantly in May of the previous year by inaugurating a new manufacturing facility in Tallinn, Estonia.
